imagesA former President, Nigerian Bar Association, Olisa Agbakoba, SAN, has called for the immediate sack of the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh.

Agbakoba’s call follows the inability of the Nigeria security agencies to stop Boko Haram’s four-year-old insurgency,

Addressing a press conference yesterday in Lagos, Agbakoba who was a delegate at the just concluded national conference said the military high command has failed in its duty and the best option left for the President was to sack the Chief of Defence Staff.

According to him, if the President as the Commander- in-Chief of the Armed Forces failed to take action then he would be seen as being weak.

He said: “If you lose a command in the army, there is only one result – dismissal. If the President failed to send a strong message that the mission is not accomplished, the commander-in chief will be weak.

“How can you have Nigerian soldiers carrying our equipment to Cameroun and running away? It tells you that army is degraded. The only way you can solve the Boko Haram problem is by a resolute decapitation of the leadership. There’s no other way, this is because they will put a knife in your back. The Chief of Defence Staff has failed; hence Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh should be relieved of his job immediately.

“It takes nothing away from Alex Badeh being a good guy, but the point is if the mission has not been accomplished there has to be a consequence. If there is no consequence nothing will change. We need to accept the fact that the threat of Boko Haram is serious and that we have completely failed. So, we need to completely degrade them.

“We have to realise that Boko Haram is copying the tactics of Isis that declared a Caliphate in Iraq. The Boko Haram declared a Caliphate in Nigeria and we are all licking ice-cream. This is the most serious challenge facing Nigeria and the only way is for the President to send the strongest possible message that enough is enough. The military high command has failed his duty, Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Bade should be relieved of his job immediately.”

On the just concluded national conference, Agbakoba said the conference has further exposed Nigeria as a country that is seriously ill where everyone speaks according to his tribe.

He warned that that no country thrives on the basis of tribal sentiments stressing that country thrives on the basis that the best guys are doing the job.

“Nigerian is seriously ill; it is a fragmented and divided country and agrees on nothing. If there is an issue, everybody will speak according to his own tribe,” he said.

Agbakoba, who expressed disappointment with the quality of discussions at the conference added that a lot of delegates came to the conference simply because of the money.

He said: “I thought the national conference was about forming a new Nigeria. A lot of people came to the conference with preconceived notions. So my proposal for us to discuss core issues was absolutely defeated.

“A lot of us came to the conference because of the money. So, the longer we stayed at the conference the better. My motion to narrow down the conference to discuss core issues affecting Nigeria did not succeed. So, the kind quality debate that I thought we come out with did not come out.

“I was very disappointed, so I am happy that I did not accept the money. My conscience is clean because the conference ought to have produced better results. But, having said that we must only be critical, we must give the President a pass mark for at least putting it together. Other presidents wanted to use to promote selfish agenda, but I did not see Jonathan influencing anything as far as my eyes can see.”
